Closing the Visibility Gap in the Digital Last Mile

The discussion centered on a persistent visibility gap in pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturing: validated data on room status, equipment state, and batch assignments may reside in MES, ERP, LIMS, EAM, EMS, DCS and other enterprise platforms, but often does not reach operators at the point of production when decisions must be made. When Digital Investment Stops Short of the Operator

Life sciences manufacturers have invested heavily in MES, LIMS, EAM, EMS, DCS Systems over the past two decades. Yet the visibility gap persists; validated data is available, but not always visible to operators where production decisions occur.

Many sites still rely on printed labels, paper-based status indicators, and manual documentation at the point of production. Dieckert underscored the persistence of paper on the shop floor: “In the U.S. and in Europe, if you look into manufacturing sites, nearly 50% of these manufacturing sites are still based on paper. From an MES perspective, paper is still the number one competitor.”

This is not limited to less mature organizations. Dieckert cited a senior manufacturing IT executive at a top-10 pharmaceutical company who acknowledged that, despite major MES, LIMS, and ERP programs, roughly a quarter of manufacturing processes remained paper-based. Built on Industry Experience

Stormbit was established in 2026 as the software-focused entity within the Systec & Solutions Group, a Karlsruhe-based global organization founded in 2013 with experience in cleanroom-ready Human Machine Interface hardware for regulated manufacturing environments. The spin-off reflects a focus on modern software development while drawing on the group’s background in GxP shop-floor environments.

The leadership team brings more than 40 years of combined experience in digital manufacturing and pharmaceutical software. Co-Managing Director Hermann Schäfer has successfully built and expanded numerous companies — both organically and through strategic partnerships and M&A activities, while Dieckert’s career has focused on manufacturing IT software for pharma and biotech.

Schulze framed the brand-development work as central to the spin-off’s commercial identity: “Building Stormbit’s brand went far beyond the logo – it meant defining the company’s market positioning from scratch: how Stormbit differentiates itself in GxP manufacturing, how that translates into the products themselves, and how it all comes together in a brand story the team can build on. Building something this comprehensive from scratch is rare.”

Stormbit’s mission, as Dieckert stated it, is “validated data, at the point of use.” Its vision is “a GxP world without paper, without delays, or any blind spots.” That framing reflects the visibility gap the company is targeting.

Closing the Last Mile: VEYA’s Approach to Point-of-Use Visiblity

The visibility gap VEYA is intended to address is not a technology problem in the conventional sense. The data exists. The enterprise systems that hold it are operational, validated, and in most cases well-maintained. What is often missing is the last connection: from those systems to the specific room door, machine surface, or container in motion where an operator must make a decision.

VEYA is positioned to provide that connection through an integrated software and hardware platform that pulls validated data from existing enterprise systems and delivers it, in real time, at the point of work.

The software layer functions as a central command center, connecting data from MES, LIMS, EMS, EAM, DCS, and ERP platforms via standard protocols including OPC-UA, REST APIs, and MQTT – to name a few examples. A no-code template designer enables teams to configure what information appears on each display or label, with conditional logic, barcodes, and dynamic status fields. “The platform includes a full audit trail and version-controlled approval workflow for template changes, designed to meet Annex 11 compliance requirements,” commented Dieckert.

The display hardware is designed and qualified for cleanroom manufacturing environments (e.g. IP65 rated), suited for room signage and equipment labeling at suite doors and production assets. Wireless electronic paper labels address container labeling in environments where conventional printing presents a particulate contamination risk. A third hardware variant covers non-cleanroom applications including laboratory and calibration environments.

Dieckert described the platform’s operational differentiation as the ability to combine validated data from multiple systems at the point of use: “The beauty here is really that you can combine data coming from different sources. If it’s only e.g. MES, or only EMS, but the combination of both, it is really strong.”

The system is deployed as a web application running on a customer-hosted on-premise server, a public or private cloud instance, a design choice Dieckert explained is driven by the proximity requirements inherent in shop floor applications.

The Visibility Gap in Manufacturing Operations

The six use cases VEYA addresses today map directly to the points in the digital last mile where the visibility gap is most consequential: the specific locations in pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturing where validated information that already exists in enterprise systems consistently fails to reach the operator who needs it in real time.

  • Room signage: live data, information, ands information on equipment assets, including tanks, bioreactors, and vessels.
  • Container labels: ID, product, and status information on bulk and intermediate containers.
  • Digital dashboards: production and process overviews in manufacturing.
  • Calibration labels: due dates, status, and compliance information on calibrated assets.
  • Stock labeling: status and identification for warehouse and logistics assets.

Dieckert positioned VEYA explicitly as a complement to, rather than a replacement for existing manufacturing IT platforms: “We are positioning VEYA as a very, very strong add-on, a booster, to these existing manufacturing IT systems. Being friends and getting into strategic partnerships with the MESs of the world, with the LIMSs of the world, with the EAMs of the world is for us a quite important strategic move in terms of go-to-market.”

To support that strategy, the company has signed several partnership and integration agreements,  including with a leading MES provider, a technology partner in the IIoT/manufacturing platform space, a leading EAM & CMMS provider, and a LIMS integration partner based in North America. Formal announcements of these partnerships are planned for the second half of 2026. The service and implementation model is explicitly partner-led. As Dieckert stated: “We do have a clear vision to become a true software powerhouse, and not the mixture of software and services.”

Early Adoption an Commercial Activity

VEYA was co-developed with AbbVie and Fareva-Excella, two industry organizations whose early engagement helped test the solution concept before commercial launch. Dieckert described that development approach as important: “It is already validated by two leading industry companies.” Within months of market entry, the company reports live GxP use cases with references including Takeda, Pfizer, and Eli Lilly.

The company’s subscription-based model spans both software and hardware. Growth is planned through three channels: expansion within existing accounts through additional use cases and device coverage, new customer acquisition through direct sales and Systec & Solutions referrals, and a growing ecosystem of reseller and system integrator partners.

Stormbit is initially focused on pharma and biotech, though early discussions with leading med device companies signal potential expansion into the medical device sector, with partner-driven opportunities in adjacent regulated industries evaluated as they emerge.

In Brief

The visibility gap that Stormbit is targeting is not new, and it is not small. It sits at the end of the digital last mile: the distance between enterprise systems that hold validated manufacturing data and the operators who need that data to work safely and compliantly at rooms, machines, and containers across production sites. Enterprise platforms have advanced substantially in the past two decades, but that final connection has consistently been left to paper, verbal communication, or time-consuming system logins. Closing it is the precise problem VEYA seeks to solve.

Stormbit’s lineage within the Systec & Solutions Group provides relevant background in cleanroom hardware and GxP compliance. The early participation of pharmaceutical companies in product co-development and initial deployments suggests market interest in the gap being addressed: not simply the technology, but the operational consequence of leaving it unclosed. The partner-led go-to-market model is aligned with a market already served by established MES, LIMS, EAM, and ERP platforms that may become distribution channels rather than competitors.

The primary execution challenge will be demonstrating that closing the visibility gap holds at enterprise scale: across multiple sites, heterogeneous system landscapes, and under the scrutiny of change control and validation requirements that define regulated manufacturing. 

The life sciences sector carries long institutional memory of integration promises that proved difficult to sustain in practice. Proving consistent, validated connectivity at pace and at scale will be the proving ground for Stormbit’s commercial ambitions.
