Modern Healthcare is shifting to personalized care tailored to each patient’s anatomy, therapeutic regimen and expectations. As a result, Med-Tech companies are seeking new ways to develop, design and manufacture more personalized devices that improve patient outcomes while increasing quality of care and reducing Healthcare costs.
To address this need, Siemens and Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy Synthes Joint Reconstruction division leveraged the Personalized Product Innovation platform to develop the TRUMATCH® Personalized Solutions. Siemens brought medical image analysis and software development expertise to the DePuy Synthes Joint Reconstruction team and adapted it to meet the product needs of the TRUMATCH® Personalized Solutions.® The result is a system that DePuy Synthes Joint Reconstruction uses to design patient-specific customized instrumentation quickly and safely.
Siemens presented its “Personalized Product Innovation” platform at the company’s analyst and press event. This platform provides key capabilities to help Med-Tech companies shift from the traditional “build-to-stock” approach to the emerging “built to order” personalized device.
The process begins when magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans are converted to computer-aided design (CAD) models using an automated image segmentation application. These CAD models are then used to specify and optimize the position and shape of the personalized medical device.
After physician approval, the personalized CAD models trigger automatic updates to manufacturing templates for 3D printing, computer numerical control (CNC) machining, and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) inspection for quality assurance checks. Manufacturing operations are then verified and optimized for efficiency and accuracy using machine tool simulation,
“We are excited to collaborate with DePuy Synthes Joint Reconstruction on TRUMATCH® Personalized Solutions and to have the opportunity to help advance patient care. This is a great example of how we are working with our customers to help them optimize their products.” said Chuck Grindstaff, CEO and president, Siemens PLM Software. “Teams from TRUMATCH® Personalized Solutions and Siemens Product Lifecycle Management, Inc. are working on an integrated design system intended to automate the creation of customized instrumentation, allowing DePuy Synthes Joint Reconstruction to service more patients with individualized products.” he added.
The Personalized Product Innovation platform supports the end-to-end process chain, ensuring that the engineer-to-order process is securely managed and controlled, facilitating collaboration and delivering information to all constituents.
As a result of this collaboration Johnson & Johnson awarded Siemens the “Supplier Enabled Innovation of the Year” award.
As Med-Tech companies continue their shift to personalized devices, end to end platforms like Siemen’s Personalized Product Innovation system will play a key role helping Med-Tech companies meet market demands while improving outcomes and reducing costs.
